140 Characters Conference: Twitter at the speed of Porn, Food, Autism

This week’s 140 Characters Conference, a 2-day event that tackles, in digestible 20-minute panels almost as brief as Twitter itself, how social networking may be employed to capitalize on, summarize, crystallize, and disseminate our rapidly compartmentalized thoughts.

I will be moderating a panel titled NSFW: Is Social Media Appropriate for the Adult Industry? that features model and entrepreneur Kelly Shibari, Pornstar Tweet.com’s Pete Housely, and Evan Seinfeld, of “Oz,” Biohazard, and Rockstar/Pornstar fame.

Other panels deal with everything from tweeting the news, “the Convergence of New Media and Entertainment,” tweeting about foodies and cattle ranching, and how people with Autism may thrive in a social media setting.

I caught part of the Autism panel. UCLA student Robert Moran, who has Autism, talked of his “Mind Blindness” and said that the 140-character limit of tweets is better than Facebook status updates, because the latter leaves far more room for confusion.

People are still figuring out how to use social media. Is it a turbine that can generate power and money from the water of our intense narcissism? Is it part of a much larger toolbox of promotion? Or is it just silly—after all, how can you take the name “Twitter” seriously?

After all, the biggest “no-kidding” moment in social networking news was the headline “Sarah Palin Twitters.”

At tonight’s NSFW panel, which will be livecast at 6 p.m. here, I might mention how the only money I can see coming in from porn’s utilization of Twitter is in the tweeting of a porn performer’s Amazon wishlist. Other, more serious topics will include how best—and most responsibly— to tweet shots of your ass when a good portion of Twitter users are below the age of 18.
