“Barely Legal” teaches teen empowerment

The latest “Barely Legal” spinoff offers a Girl Power message to teens who might not otherwise believe in themselves: “Girlz Rule.”

It’s the same heartwarming message delivered by fast food chains whose commercials include as many minorities, the happy handicapped, and – invariably – a kid in glasses who is good with computers, as possible. “Girlz Rule” tells young women that it’s OK to be a girl, especially a girl-on-girl girl.

Look how Dahlia Denyle and Victoria Shay touch tongue-tips while glancing at us: the message could not be clearer that these girls had strong female role models and that they are interested in bettering their communities by virtue of their ineffable girlness.

“I wanna test every limit; I wanna go wild,” states the theme song.

To show how effectively Hustler has pornographically co-opted the “Girlz Rule” message, check out a scrapbook design for girls, or this Girlz Rule page of Christian hits sung by Christian girls.

Watch out for other affirming titles in “Barely Legal”‘s upcoming lineup like “Heavy and Happy,” “Still Retarded, Still Horny,” and “It’s OK to Be Mexican.”
