(I was going to title this review “Unzipping ‘Fly Girls'” but I didn’t want to appear to be suggesting that you torrent it. Instead, you should buy two copies.)

“Fly Girls” is a polished and funny movie about a group of adult stars who think they’re making a porn movie about Flight Attendants. This could be unfortunate, as there is already a much poorer porn movie called “Flight Attendants.”

Because they were filmed around the same time last year, Digital Playground’s “Fly Girls” and XPlay’s “Flight Attendants” are often confused. Adding insult to injury is the fact that “Flight Attendants” was released months before “Fly Girls.”

Not only that, but DP’s successful string of occupational porn films, including “Cheerleaders,” “Babysitters,” “Nurses,” and “Teachers,” were also directly responsible for porn parody producer Jeff Mullen’s decision to have a go at the subgenre himself, releasing “Flight Attendants” in late 2009.

But, whereas “Flight Attendants” borrowed both heavily and sloppily from the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker air tragedy film takeoff “Airplane!” (thus making “Flight Attendants” a parody of a parody), “Fly Girls” is, at least by comparison, sexy, restrained, and original.

Evan Stone, Jesse Jane, Katsuni, Jenna Haze, and Riley Steele arrive at an airport in costume to film their airplane porn saga, but guerilla director Manuel Ferrara and his assistant, Sasha Grey, have failed to obtain permits. Meanwhile, their airline contact who was to clear their way is being detained by security, played by Ben English as a stuttering pervert.

While English then detains actual flight attendants whom he believes are porn stars (including Lisa Ann, and you can imagine where that goes), the porno flight crew make it onto the passenger jet, believing that 17 cameras are mounted around the plane. These setups pave the way for plenty of stewardess-on-stewardess-on-passenger-on-pilot sex, all of which looks great. Then, for a reason that is similarly feasible in a porn setting, Jesse Jane must land the plane with the help (suitably repaid) of on-the-spot air traffic controller Marco Banderas.

As a porn movie teeming with famous porn stars playing versions of their personae (Jenna Haze bores her castmates with stories of how many awards she’s won, Evan Stone makes frequent reference to his gay fan base and plays his character as an unhinged, scenery-chewing sybarite), it is unclear if “Fly Girls” is top-heavy with inside jokes.

For example, I don’t know if English, who enjoys (and probably cultivates) a truly Satanic reputation in the porn industry as the president of its most successful talent agency, L.A. Direct Models, is so good in his role because the part itself is good or because he plays it particularly Napoleonically.

It just goes to show you that if you have some of the most carnally accessible people in the world, you still need a good reason – or at least a somewhat plausible one – to show them having sex, and that’s what makes “Fly Girls” a great movie.
