Linda Lovelace: I Love Lamp

The artist Gabriela was too shy to read a Linda Lovelace biography, even in Spanish. So she made a lamp.

“I traveled around Spain with the book Dentro Linda Lovelace, but found I could not bring myself to actually read it,” she says. “I tried, but it felt strange and invasive to read the intimate moments of the ‘Deep Throat’ star’s life in such graphic detail.”

So now, instead of shining an invasive light on the celebrated and troubled Lovelace, who died in 2002, her words and pictures gently illuminate a room.

Gabriela says the bright orange cover of “Dentro Linda Lovelace” caught her eye instantly when she saw it in a used bookshop in Cordova.

“Somewhere in Madrid, after trying to read it again and closing it, I had the idea of making something beautiful out of the pages,” she says. “I ripped one of the pages and, folding it this way and that, I created an origami box.”

She then created 159 more origami boxes from the Lovelace biography as well as a 1960’s-era sex encyclopedia.

“If you look closely at the boxes, you can catch sexy words in English and Spanish and see little pictures of Ms. Lovelace,” Gabriela says.
