Pissing in the desert: “The Return of Post-Apocalyptic Cowgirls”

I talked with director Maria Beatty about “The Return of Post-Apocalyptic Cowgirls,” which finds characters we first met in 2008 roaming the man-free Arizona desert to fuck among the saguaros.

Gram: Many of your films feature the Arizona wasteland as a backdrop—and we’re not talking about Jenna Jameson’s Scottsdale. Can you tell us a little about the Greater Tucson pro sex scene?

Beatty: There’s a big collective queer scene in Arizona and most of the performers are heavily into pro sex activism and sex work as performance art. They’re more into experimenting with SM and gender fuck play rather than straight on porno. There’s more of a collaborative effort when it comes to finding the location, props, sex partners, and the overall creative process of these post-apocalyptic desert kink films.

Gram: Your recent films have been set in L.A., Arizona, and Paris, which is metropolitan in a Golden Age of Porn kind of way. What determines where you’ll shoot?

Beatty: There’s no intentional pattern that goes into my globe trotting. It was by chance and word of mouth that I came in touch with Surgeon Scofflaw for “Post Apocalyptic Cowgirls,” and we naturally hit it off, with a great connection and desire to work together on Part Two.

I just directed my first gay porn film starring the infamous Rose-Wood which recently premiered at the Berlin Porn Film Festival and to be included in a compilation series “Fucking Different.” Since I just had a baby boy I plan to stay put in Paris for some time and see what unravels here and eventually takes me back on the road again.

Gram: Surgeon Scofflaw’s character is a little like Mad Max without the nascent fundamental Chritianity and more pissing.

Beatty: She’s a vision of the way life will be after the revolution when “Queers” rule the world and have kinky sex all the time.

Gram: I;m writing this down…

Beatty: She’s a Desert Domme Madame Top but she shows some vulnerability and the character is subject to the whims of everywhere around her.

Gram: Other than Michael Ninn, who got his “Sacred Sin” scored by Eddie Van Halen, no one else can claim a porn composer with name recognition. Yet both Lydia Lunch and John Zorn have worked with you on several movies.

Beatty: I was immersed in the whole New York underground scene back in the 80’s and interviewed Lydia Lunch for my first video project, “Gang of Souls,” in 1989. We stayed on and off in contact until reconnecting to collaborate on a soundtrack for my film “Post Apocalyptic Cowgirls” in 2007. We still have some other projects brewing.

John Zorn I met up with in 1991 for my first SM film “Alot of Fun for the Evil One” and from there came a series of collaborations; “Elegant Spanking,” “The Black Glove,” “Belle De Nature,” “Lilith (Mother of Evil)” and “The Return of Post-Apocalyptic Cowgirls.”

Gram: I don’t suppose you watch any corporate porn movies like “Pirates” or “Big Cocks for Little Cuties” or anything like that…

Beatty: No, I don’t watch any Corporate Porno films.

Gram: And how would you define your own adult filmmaking style?

Beatty: If I were to imagine any kind of influence or take on anything it would be a little “Monty Pythons Flying Circus,” “Twin Peaks,” “X-Files,” “True Blood,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Mad Men,” National Geographic and some indie films [like] “Crash,”Enter the Void,” “The Prophet,” “AntiChrist” … Maria Beatty style and Voila!

At least strap-on dildos survived the apocalypse. In this sequel to the 2008 original, self-assured desert domme Surgeon Scofflaw gets her comeuppance in an airplane graveyard—and is and is not pissy about it.

Studio: Bleu Productions
Director: Maria Beatty
Starring: Arcana, Billy Rough, Surgeon Scofflaw, Sophia St. James
Music by Lydia Lunch and John Zorn

“The sins of the flesh are just a sacrifice to Venus.”

In a dusty pueblo dooryard outside Bisbee, AZ, be-turquoised desert domme Surgeon Scofflaw spanks her Boi Friday Billy Rough and then sodomizes her for what, in my opinion, was a crappy job chopping wood.

This is the opening scene to Maria Beatty’s “The Return of Post Apocalyptic Cowgirls,” a series of exchanges opening a window on the world of sex in places with saguaros nearby. We hear the desert wind, see dust devils in the distance, and imagine there must be some sex-positive or otherwise Libertarian reason reason none of these performers can bear to live adjacent to a Del Taco or galleria.

Scofflaw and Rough have a charming relationship and, even after this initial hiccup, we get the feeling that Scofflaw is tough but fair. When the duo encounter pale shopkeeper Arcana soaping up her washboard, why, Scofflaw saws on a 3-string violin while she lets Rough go at the new prize.

But the tide turns for everyone when the three embark on a vision quest to a Tucson airplane salvage yard. There Rough is punished for taking too many liberties and Scofflaw herself is taken down a peg by Sophia St. James, desert wanderer. But the two fist and piss their way into a reconciliation.

“The Return of Post-Apocalyptic Cowgirls” is undoubtedly an ensemble movie, like an experimental theatre piece mounted on a masive canvas. This vision of “what the world will look like when queers rule it” doesn’t offer much hope to breeders like me, but to a fan of porn movies with a narrative, a vision, and a cast that looks like it’s having a great time, it’s perfect.

It’s also a treat to see that Surgeon Scofflaw graduated from cramped AMC Spirits to aeroplanes in her life of fisting crime.

  1. When queers rule the Earth I’m hoping they clean the rest of this dump up like they have the bourgey Gayberry over on Castro Street.
