How are porn performers handling being holed up* during the Coronavirus lockdown? At the beginning of the first full month of restricted shooting in Porn Valley, USA, adult professionals talk about connecting with fans and keeping it together during the pandemic. It also gives me the chance to reconnect with people after some time away from the business. We talk over text via various devices, opening each conversation with the sacred greeting of the Porno-American community: Send Nudes.

Casey Calvert is a writer, performer, and director. The projects she sinks her teeth into tend to be BDSM-flavored. You will find few, if any, bouncy beach romps in her catalogue. The pictures she sends are perfect for this time. It’s been unusually stark and rainy in Los Angeles and her photos have a cold light like in “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” of Soviet-occupation Prague. She’s sheltering in place with her partner, the director Eli Cross, and five pets. When we began our conversation, Calvert had just finished shooting a project for Erika Lust’s Lust Pictures.

Gram: How did that work? Were you literally phoning it in or were there performers having relations through HAZMAT suits like Mormons?

Calvert: Sort of a combo of the first two. They hired a couple of people to self-shoot an interview and a solo (masturbation scene) for a project about the quarantine, directed partly via Skype.

Services like the UK-based platform OnlyFans, launched in 2016, have become a major revenue stream for adult performers as well as personal trainers and other lifestyle influencers (pauses to daintily vomit), making it distinct from the clunkier, all-adult, and less social media-friendly Clips4Sale. Performers use their OnlyFans accounts to post videos to and interact with subscribers. The revenue share is 80/20 in favor of the performer, and there’s an app for that.

Gram: How has OnlyFans figured into your plague survival?

Casey: I feel really grateful that I built up my OnlyFans profile pre-pandemic.because having that income takes a huge amount of stress off right now. And, turns out, if I engage my fans, they engage back, which is pretty nifty.

Gram: It really is a process of building (your following) and tending it, isn’t it? I was happy to learn that the cut OnlyFans took wasn’t as usurious as other platforms.

Casey: Oh for sure. The tending it—that’s one of the good and bad parts about it. Good in that it gives back what you put in, bad in that, miss a couple of days, your following plummets. It’s fascinating how quickly people jump ship. While I still think (the 20 percent cut OnlyFans takes) us a bit egregious, it’s certainly better than quite a few of the other platforms.

Gram: How much has this platform increased its footprint in your life and income since the quarantine started?

Casey: In terms of income percentages, last month OnlyFans was 30-40 percent of my income. Now it is 90 percent. This time last month, I logged in every day, at least twice (once in the morning, once before bed). Depending on what I was doing that day, sometimes I spent all day logged on in the background while I did other things. Sometimes it was just those two times. I uploaded new content probably five times a week. Since March 14th, my last day of work, I’ve been logged on all day, every day. It hasn’t so much been in the background but what I’m actively doing all day. I’ve sent out content every single day since then, and also banked a bunch of content for future uploads. I’m also selling custom videos through OnlyFans at 50 percent off right now, so I’ve been selling and shooting a bunch of those.

Gram: Not that you’d wish a pandemic on anyone, but is there something liberating about the quarantine for you?

Gram: Aside from not being able to go outside to shoot your material, have you found the quarantine changes the nature and tone of what you are making?

Casey: Not really. Still shooting what the people want to see. Mostly me putting things in my butt. (OK, it’s kinda turned into me putting weird household items in my butt.)

Gram: FASCINATING.

Casey: My bread and butter is:

  1. Anal solos
  2. Anal solos with really gross dirty talk
  3. JOIs
  4. Storytime videos (a thing I do where I tell sexy stories to the camera, clothed. Sometimes real, sometimes roleplay)
  5. Pee videos

Gram: What’s JOIs, Precious?

Casey: JOI = jerk off instruction. I tell you how to masturbate. Can me sweet and girlfriend-y or can be femdom-y

Gram: Oh! I guessed the JO but was crossing my fingers that the I would be for “Injury.” Damn it!

Gram: I see that you’re sexting from the 352. Isn’t the 352 area code Tom Pettyville? How instrumental (for or against) was Florida in sculpting your style of pornography?

Casey: Mostly in the sense that all these years later I’m still on Florida time, so I’m usually asleep by 9:30. (Area Code) 352 is Tom Pettyville and Gator Country. There’s a million ways my answer for this question could go. I mean, growing up in Gainesville shaped a lot of things about me. But I’m terms of sculpting my style of pornography, I guess what it taught me is that there’s money to be made in fetish. That not all porn needs to be mainstream and identical. (Most of the porn made in central Florida is fetish-based.

Gram: So let’s say we are six months in the future and all projects that were on hold have come roaring back. People who were just hanging on in the industry have slipped away back to Arizony and Connecticut. What projects will you be hip-deep in again when the quarantine lifts?

Casey: I’ll be doing all the normal performing I do. I’ll be shooting my Girlsway feature. I’ll be in pre-production for my next Lust Cinema feature. And I’ll still be doing OnlyFans and custom videos and all that jazz.

Gram: If performers realize they can just work from home, what is the inspiration for you to continue in this realm of pornography? Like, on set, people have expectations of you and you have to show up and stuff…

Casey: The inspiration for me? Excellent question that I’m trying to figure out myself. I think it’s just that I need variety in experience, I need more than just solos in my bedroom to keep my brain satiated.

Casey Calvert, James Deen, and Derrick Pierce appear in the clever dystopian Hollywood nightmare indie film “Diminuendo” (co-starring Richard Hatch and Walter Koenig in an epic “Battlestar Galactica”/”Star Trek” crossover that asks the question: What if Ensign Chekhov was Drunk Apollo’s theatrical agent?!), now streaming on Amazon.

*Yes, I saw what I did there.
