Uncomfortably Close with Gram Ponante Episode One: Roy Karch

Uncomfortably Close with Gram Ponante

Roy KarchI have gone down the podcast route before, but this spring and summer I have been having a lot of fun with longer-form interviews, both to challenge myself (I get better as we go along, I promise) and to throw a little light on an industry that doesn’t get treated right, even after sweeps weeks and Vice and basic cable. I hope to share some stories you haven’t heard before.

I started with Roy Karch because I’ve known Roy a long time. He is a fascinating guy who was there close to the start of Porn’s California Experiment but, like most of the major players, he comes from the East Coast.

To hear Roy Karch tell it, he was the first person to shoot porn on video (as opposed to film), thus revolutionizing the adult industry. I talk with the veteran pornographer, now 68, about his decades in the adult business, including anecdotes about Seka, Christy Canyon, John Holmes, and hundreds of adult stars from the 1970s to the 2000s, as well as the options available to the senior citizen smut peddler.
