Savanna Samson looks, Steve Hirsch sounds, I feel wistful

A recent article in the New York Times about the dwindling of porn plots featured a photo of Savanna Samson staring thoughtfully toward the Bowery and a quote from Vivid co-founder Steve Hirsch waxing nostalgic.

Referring to the current vignettization of porn, Hirsch recalled the glory days.

“It’s almost like we’re back to the late ’70s or early ’80s when the average movie was eight minutes and just a sex scene,” Mr. Hirsch said, sounding wistful.

The article was sent to me by Adrienne Gruben, who writes an excellent stream of consciousness column for the Examiner that somehow manages to tie everything together in the end.

“Why don’t you pitch stories like this to [mainstream media]?” she asked, and I thought of the dozens of writers I personally know or have been interviewed by who pull in a supplementary income from reputable old media publications by explaining things to the rest of the world that I do by means of Bob Seger references here.

I thought, “but I already wrote those stories. It would be like cannibalizing myself.”

Seriously, though. All I’d have to do is change the headlines and remove all mention of Cthulhu. Self-cannibalization isn’t bad for an inflated word count at a rate significantly higher than the gentlemen’s magazines and trade publications of the porn world.

I mean: I’d eat me.
