Today I watched director Ren Savant’s “The 8th Day,” which should clean up at the various awards-granting shows next year and for which I will post a review shortly. It was postapocalyptacular.
In terms of promotional swag, however, producers chose an item so briefly referenced in the 4-hour movie that it made me think of a Black Sabbath cover band that chooses to call itself “Tinkling Bell,” or the headscratcher of a name that is the J. Geils Band.
But upon further reflection, an “8th Day” Etch-a-Sketch is really appropriate for this movie, considering the odd relationship Kayden Kross’s character has with her dad. In fact, the movie should have been subtitled “Take Your Daughter to Jerk Day.”
If “The 8th Day” wins a number of big awards (and it should), it will validate the stereotype of the very special relationship dads have with their future-pornstar daughters. That said, there is not one scene in this epic in which a woman is forced to be in a porn movie at gunpoint.
