In a business built on the backs of 19-year-olds, it’s easy to forget that adult entertainment has and continues to make history.
Gamelink has acquired the rights to several classic porn titles, some of which have never been seen before on DVD, from Mitchell Brothers Studios in San Francisco. I talked with Mitchell Brothers’ scion Meta Jane Johnson for the following press release, and it was nice to hear about porn movies in the context of civic history. Maybe it just makes me feel less dirty.

Online Retailer Snags Rare Titles Now Commercially Available for the First Time
CYBERSPACE, October 29, 2013 – Gamelink.com, the leading adult e-commerce site in the world, announces a landmark specialty collaboration with San Francisco XXX distributor Mitchell Brothers Studios to carry a number of its titles exclusively, some of which have never been released on DVD before.
The studio that produced the legendary XXX treasure “Behind the Green Door” is giving Gamelink.com customers exclusive access to a number of its titles for the first time ever on DVD (as well as streaming/download) for those who want to keep the classics in their special collection. Some of these titles include “Resurrection of Eve,” “Inside Marilyn Chambers,” and other titles.
“We have been trying to license this content for a long time,” says Gamelink.com VP of Business Development Jeff Dillon. “We hoped that we would be able to get exclusive rights to movies that are not only entertaining and titillating, but have historic value in our great city of San Francisco.”
The Mitchell Brothers opened the infamous O’Farrell Theatre in 1969, and produced “Behind the Green Door” three years later, a movie that grossed $25 million at the box office and introduced the first wave of Porno Chic. The brothers used their “Green Door” money to make “Resurrection of Eve,” “Sodom And Gomorrah,” and “Autobiography of A Flea.”
“‘Sodom And Gomorrah was my father’s favorite film to make,” says Meta Jane Johnson, daughter of the late Jim Mitchell, and now the O’Farrell’s general manager. “Unfortunately it was deemed ‘too weird’ by 1970s audiences, but we think that’s what makes it great. ‘Autobiography of a Flea’ is the first female-directed adult film (Sharon McNight), and ‘Behind the Green Door: the Sequel’ is the first condom-only porn, made in response to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s; something that was especially hard-hitting here in San Francisco.”
“Everyone in adult knows the Mitchell Brothers and their story, and the rich history of the movies they made and their effect on pop culture today,” says Dillon. “With the release of Paul Thomas’ well-received “New Behind the Green Door” last month, we think there will be a renewed interest in these movies, and we are excited to carry them.”
“We’re very happy to be able to open up these titles to a new generation,” says Johnson.
