I was on my way to meet the new Vivid Girl, AJ Bailey, and first got stuck in traffic and then got lost. In my city. I thought Los Angeles and I had an understanding.
Finally arriving at the location I climbed through a warehouse and emerged on the roof. It was 6 in the evening on the first really hot day of the year.
“Where is the New One,” I said. “Show her to me.”
“She went home, Grams,” I was told. “She already shot her scene.”
I’d missed AJ Bailey, Anthropologist? After Los Angeles betrayed me? After discovering I was in the same spot where, two years ago, my #2 fan in the porn industry began getting squeezed out like pus from a pimple?
“But we’ve still got one scene to go,” I was told. “It would make the Vivid Corporation so happy if you’d stay.”
“I can’t. I can’t,” I said. “The day is ruined and now there is only drinking, comfort women, and tears.”

I think Karter is the answer to questions not even invented yet.
The near-translucent Karter was in the last scene of the day and she performed it on the roof in the 99-degree sunset.
Later, as she gingerly daubed costar Eric’s seed from her person lest it fry into her skin, she posed in front of the city that had done me wrong.
“Everything is all right up on the roof,” she didn’t say. I’d meet The New One some other time. Everything was fine.
