Nautica Thorn pricks Texas this weekend, dancing from April 12 – 14 at Brownsville-by-the-Gulf’s Stilettos Gentlemen’s Establishment.
As you know, Brownsville is on the Gulf Coast as well as a five-minute walk to Matamoros, Mexico. It is a hard-drinkin’, hard lovin’ border town, prone to floods and the grievances of the heart.
Brownsville Station, the group that recorded the 1973 hit “Smokin’ in the Boys’ Room”, was actually from Detroit. But it was Helen Reddy who provided these words of warning:
She’s forty-one and her daddy still calls ‘er “baby”
All the folks ’round Brownsville say she’s crazy
’cause she walks downtown with her suitcase in her hand
Lookin’ for a mysterious dark-haired manIn her younger days they called her Delta Dawn
Prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on
Then a man of low degree stood by her side
Promised her he’d take her for his bride
Don’t let that happen to you, Nautica!
