Site maintenance: Why Gram’s love for Hulu has gone unrequited

In my daily life (as Ronnie James Dio), I use the site Hulu to watch everything from old, free movies to new, free television. The sound and video quality are excellent and the buffer footprint is minimal. I rarely have to reload a page or sit through an interrupted stream.

Not only that, but Hulu also allows users to embed videos like “The Doom Generation” and “Fast Sofa” on their own websites to add even more richness to already brilliant and insightful posts about Rose McGowan’s nipples, Jake Busey’s teeth, or Asia Carrera’s nipples (Happy Birthday, by the way, Ms. Carrera).

That is, everyone but me. See if you can locate in Hulu’s Term of Service why Hulu videos are not showing up on my site minutes after stories are posted:

You may embed videos using the Video Player, provided you do not embed the Video Player on any website or other location that (i) contains or hosts content that is unlawful, infringing, pornographic, obscene, defamatory, libelous, threatening, harassing, vulgar, indecent, profane, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive, encourages criminal conduct, gives rise to civil liability, violates any law, rule, or regulation, infringes any right of any third party including intellectual property rights, is otherwise inappropriate or objectionable to Hulu (in Hulu’s sole discretion), or (ii) links to infringing or unauthorized content (collectively, “Unsuitable Material”). You may not embed the Video Player into any hardware or software application, even for non-commercial purposes. Hulu reserves the right to prevent embedding to any website or other location that Hulu finds inappropriate or objectionable (as determined by Hulu in its sole discretion).

So even though Hulu advertises both of those movies as “intended for mature audiences only,” its overlords somehow feel that my wholesome site will taint their image. Oh well. If occasion demands it I will provide an old-fashioned link from now on. But with profound disappointment.

I just wanted Hulu to like me.

  1. I've spent an inordinate amount of time on the Hulu over the past 9 months or so. Their embed policy might be a result of advertisers not wanting their products associated with the more… prurient… sides of life.

  2. Hulu fucking blows–the working actors/writers in the stuff they post have seen zero residuals for this stuff, which they used to get paid for. It's a way for the industry to get past piracy and collect ad revenue but screws the actors/writers in the bargain. The new contract allows for some payment but it's still a farce.

I know that's the way of the world in the adult biz, but in the real world, people like to get paid for the use of their work–people didn't write for Benson or Scarecrow and Mrs. King because they thought it was art, you know.

    JR.

  3. gram, when you get the chance, spare a thought for all us poor hulu-less barbarians outside the gate, an accident of geography leaves us lost. and i really, wanted to see 'Fast Sofa' too.

as for jimmy hoffa up above me, the sooner this residuals/rights bollocks gets knocked on the head the better, you get paid for a days work and that's the rate, end of.
imagine plumbers living off the royalties for a particularly good bit of toilet work they did in the 80s.
you want a bigger slice, take bigger risks and setup your own production company, otherwise, you're just staff like the guys that does the catering and the guy that sets lights. and there's nothing wrong with that.

  4. "you get paid for a days work and that's the rate, end of."

Fair enough, Ronald Reagan, provided that day rate reflects our proper share of the pie that the industry is earning from our work.
