Vivid Does Kim – Again

Vivid is moving forward with the release of the Kim Kardashian sex tape, originally scheduled for last month.

Vivid co-founder Steven Hirsch has always allowed a little wiggle room in press releases about the rights Vivid secured for the DVD (for an alleged $1 million), saying, “We remain very confident that we have the legal right to distribute this video.”

Hirsch continues to confirm this. Owing to SugarDVD’s reported offer of $2 million, I asked Hirsch who got the money and why the vendor went with half the other company’s offer.

“There’s things I am not allowed to talk about,” Hirsch said, “and there is a certain amount of (financial) exposure for us (if the tape is never released), but the seller assumes more of the legal exposure.”

The sale of the tape was arranged through a third party and, though it is reasonable to assume that at one point Kardashian signed a release (thus Hirsch’s confidence), it is equally reasonable to assume that Vivid recently received a cease and desist letter.

I asked Hirsch about this but he could not comment.

“We feel it is most important that we have an opportunity to meet with Ms. Kardashian as soon as possible,” Hirsch said. “We have reached out to her to try to set up a meeting.”

Such a meeting, I think, would require a very good lunch.

Still, a recent press release said that plans to release the tape were “going forward”, and online DVD sellers expect to be able to cash in on their specially-made banner ads later this month.

In other Vivid news, a sort of extended behind the scenes documentary of Debbie Does Dallas – Again is being aired Friday nights at 11 on Showtime. Put together by the World of Wonder team (whose travels in Porn Valley include Inside Deep Throat and the series Porno Valley), if there is a G-d it features director Paul Thomas signing my copy of Jesus Christ Superstar on the set.

“Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene) had just seen Deep Throat but wanted to know what one was like,” PT said of his time shooting the Norman Jewison classic. “So we went off to the desert and she practiced her deep throating techniques on some of the, er, saints.”

I don’t care what you say – I do know how to love him.
