Porn Valley Adjacent: Captioning Art Nudes in New York

As you well know, I am a hero of the art world. My canvas is so wide and my metier so diverse that my aesthetic cannot be captured in words or even thought; it simply makes people’s heads explode, labia engorge, and skin fall off.

That is why I am sad that I cannot attend the grand opening of the New York City art gallery P.J.S. Exhibitions on May 20, featuring the debut of Risque’, 36 provocative pieces by artist Will Santillo.

I like Santillo’s work a lot. More than that, I enjoy the free snacks at gallery openings. Doubtless the cream of New York society will be there, bedecked as if in an Adrian Lyne movie. The most eclectic people eventually wind up at gallery openings if they are rich enough, occupy the same elliptical fame orbit, and enjoy turtlenecks. You might see Ron Wood, Fred Durst, Werner Herzog, RuPaul, Elliot Spitzer, Noam Chomsky, Miss Piggy, the ghost of Phil Ochs, and Sebastian Junger appreciating Santillo’s work.

P.J.S. Exhibitions changes shows every 45 days, which is just enough time to capture the zeitgeist and witness its reactions in world politics, art, and economics, then move on.

The opening reception will begin at 7pm, with complimentary refreshments and an appearance by the defining face of Risqué, Vivian. Among the 36 uniquely tri-toned photographs, one will be selected for a special signing by Santillo and the model. The artist will also be autographing copies of his collector’s edition book Flagrante Delicto at the event. All of the tastefully explicit photos and beautiful hard covers will be available for purchase on-site throughout the show’s run: May 20th through July 4th 2010.

Santillo, doubtless stroking his chin and staring into the middle distance with an intense expression, had this to say about Art:

“Erotic photography, done right, speaks to our primal instincts. It feeds the soul and allows us, for a brief moment, to touch with abandon our essence.”

Yes.

“I seek to uncover the Hidden Face of my subjects, the sensual persona that exists within all people. My work celebrates these personae with sensitivity, compassion and depth.”

A thick-kneed woman from FedEx just walked in. She handed me a box of what turned out to be Hustler’s new dildo line. I looked deep into her eyes, trying to uncover her secret sensual persona. No dice.

“Sign here,” she said.

“Sign where?” I said, touching with abandon her essence (I’m writing this from jail).

New York readers, stop in at P.J.S. Exhibitions to see these and other of Santillo’s photos uncaptioned.
