I remember when you had to travel to Calabasas to get naked for the Internet.
Just a few short years ago, smart brokers like VideoSecrets would rent out their West Porn Vally studio to places like Hustler and Vivid for a white-label girl/girl experience. You’d log in to Vivid.com or HustlerWorld and, among the dozens of webcamming Russians and Croatians feebly dialing up from cold cells in basements around the world, you’d see the promoted talent: people like Sativa Rose and Daisy Marie in a gaudy love nest.
As they would gamely toy with the ambient dildos, Rose and Marie (or the people in the control room), would interact with a group of online fans.
While these live shows still happen, now porn talent has a more lucrative option: for the cost of a home cable modem subscription, she/he can interact with fans—or that one special fan—at home, either by Skyping or by joining a site like MyFreeCams or Streamate, which will take a cut for facilitating the blessed event.
So why do porn stars even need to make movies anymore?
While there are no barriers to entry other than having passed one’s 18th birthday and having secured a place to Skype from, it is the seasoned porn performer who can rise above the Croat-rabble and command top dollar for the 1-on-1 experience fans crave. Similarly, the low-wage stripper “house girl” need only land a few porn movies before she can return in triumph to her old club as a bona fide feature dancer, then have her shoes stolen.
I will not say that there is no reason to travel to Calabasas now. Or I will not go on record saying such a thing.
