On first impression, women find men who smile less sexually attractive than men who appear to be proud and/or brooding, according to a University of British Columbia study.
Granted, the student body of the University of British Columbia is comprised entirely of loggers and ice road truckers who rarely smile. Nevertheless, 1,000 participants looked at photos of men and women and determined the facial expressions most likely to get the blood flowing downward.
Men, for example, preferred women who smiled, and found “proud” women less attractive on first glance. Women more often responded to expressions most associated with dominant males, such as confident expressions and GramPonante.com t-shirts.
From Science Daily:
“While showing a happy face is considered essential to friendly social interactions, including those involving sexual attraction — few studies have actually examined whether a smile is, in fact, attractive,” says Prof. Jessica Tracy of UBC’s Dept. of Psychology (Logging Psychology, I’m thinking). “This study finds that men and women respond very differently to displays of emotion, including smiles.”
What does this study say about the millennia-long march of progress to gender equality or neutrality? What does it say about Canadians? Why do I get an erection when women flinch?
One thing is certain: I need to redevote myself to the bad boy image I cultivated throughout nursing school.
