How do we use porn (and how often), what was our first experience with pornography, and how do we feel about ourselves because of it?
These are some of the questions a trio of British academics pose in a 20-minute online survey at PornResearch.org.
“There’s a lot of misinformation about porn and people who enjoy it and [it is] very difficult to get good research out there into the public debate,” says Feona Attwood, Professor of Sex, Communication and Culture, at Sheffield Hallam University.
As you are well aware, Sheffield is where “The Full Monty” was filmed and is just up the road from a place called Nether Edge, which you can only reach with certain curved instruments.
The researchers have crafted a survey that places no weight or judgment on the type of porn one utilizes, or even utilises, but seeks to identify how, when, and why people use pornography.
The survey questions were independently cleared by the “Research Ethics Committee of the University of Sunderland, and in accordance with the recommendations of the Association of Internet Researchers and the British Sociological Association.”
Independent verification for surveys is important so that researchers’ own biases, however subtle, do not enter the questioning. Martin Barker, Professor of Film and Television at the University of Aberystwyth (only two hours from the Welsh village in which Sophie Dee was born) states in his bio “that there is a gap between the official language that campaigners adopt, and their underlying motives and purposes.”
I took the survey and the only fault I can find is that it doesn’t address the special concerns and needs of one who receives all his porn for free, whose income is partially dependent on reviewing it, and who would feel guilty masturbating to his friends.
That is why your views on your own pornic habits will be so valuable, as I am freakishly beyond the statistical mean.
“As one commentator said, if I have twenty minutes to fill in a questionnaire, that’s 20 minutes I could be spending looking at porn!” says Clarissa Smith, Reader in Sexualities and Culture at the University of Sunderland.
That is why I suggest buying a porn DVD from a legitimate seller, watching it on a large screen without any shame, and taking the survey on your computer.
