Gram Ponante: America's Beloved Porn Journalist

Perhaps Porn Valley needs a little “Glee XXX”

I’m on the fence about the necessity of many porn parodies and, while the idea of a parody of a show that is popular mostly with gay men and high schoolers is a novel approach to attracting new porn consumers, I was apprehensive about Hustler’s “This Ain’t Glee XXX.”

The original is about a high school glee club, after all (though director Axel Braun, as he did with Hustler’s recent “Saved By the Bell” parody, moved the action to a junior college). I knew some of those people. I was some of those people. And even if the wildly popular show does artificially cross-pollinate the glee club of an Ohio high school with its cheerleading squad, all while staging elaborate song and dance numbers, I worried that an adaptation can be pulled off in the porn world I know so well.

But you know what? It’s going to be fine. In light of recent events, how bad could it possibly be?

And consider this video I made with the cast. Each person is witty and charming and full of good cheer; you want them to succeed. (In fact, in addition to “succeed,” there are several other things I would like Scarlett Fay, Andy San Dimas et al to do, but I am a professional above all else).

Director Axel Braun and Hustler Video chief Drew Rosenfeld collaborated on the music and lyrics, and actually auditioned and rehearsed the performers, something porn’s tight schedules and tighter budgets rarely allow. Luckily, there has been such little work lately that the cast gleefully accepted the extra burden.

Braun crammed several episodes of “Glee” on Hulu, and the cast was aware of the show, if not conversant about it, which is more than you can say about several recent porn parodies of shows made long before Porn Valley’s Greatest Resource (its barely legal teens) were born.

Here is Hustler’s official trailer:

    *sighs*

I’m ambivalent at best about this rash (and by that lion from Narnia, it is a rash) of porn parodies, but it’s typical of an industry that will chase a dollar right up the sphincter of unoriginal thinking with a flourish not seen an any other industry. It’s tiresome, it’s trite, and it’s RARELY well-done. Very few are truly worth watching beyond the fact there’s porn going on, and even less actually stick to the source material enough to actually be a true parody.

I miss the days when someone with some smarts and creativity can come up with an original concept and actually get it created, instead of unabashedly bastardizing someone else’s creation. Yes, it’s just porn, but there’s SO much out there (much of it free), that many people won’t even give a damn about it, and will instead go with something that is what is (i.e. Big Wet Asses 17) for probably the same price… you know, for those stalwarts that still purchase their porn *cough*.
