I’ve always loved the XRCO Awards, the adult industry-only fete in which the previous year’s standout stars and movies get feted by the elite X-Rated Critics’ Organization, of which I am a proud member.
Founded three decades ago, the XRCO Awards haven’t changed too much, and still reflect late co-founder Jim Holliday’s style. Categories include the lofty “Orgasmic Oralist” (Brooklyn Lee got it this year) and “Orgasmic Analist” (Kristina Rose repeated) as well as “Teen Cream Dream” (Lily Carter). If you’d gone to the first XRCO Awards, you’d see who got the now-retired laurels of “Video Voluminator,” “Lascivious Lesbian,” and “Volcanic Vixen.”
You have to admit that there is something quaint about those titles that lives on. And, true to porn’s very nature, there appears to be no record of who won what prior to 1993.
Like the AVN Awards and most adult awards shows that followed, there is now a variant of “Mainstream Crossover Star.” This year that award has been going James Deen’s way, including the XRCOs.
I’ve always felt that naming a Mainstream Favorite is like those movies where the protagonist forsakes his true friends—the misfits!—for the cool kids who have always been mean to him, and will be again.
I fear for any Mainstream Media Favorite winner who goes to a big Hollywood party only to get pig’s blood dropped on him/her and then destroy Sunset Boulevard in a fit of telekinesis.
And besides, shouldn’t it be a gilded emissary from “The Mainstream” who votes on this award? Shouldn’t Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Nicki Minaj, and Oprah Winfrey get together every year to decide which porn star pleases the mainstream most?
Keep porn porny, I say. Someone would get syphilis in the craft services and embarrass everyone, anyway.
